Meet Theresa Alexander, founder of The Oaks Agency.

"In Circa 1994 I saw a documentary on the challenges of inner city kids. I remember thinking, 'Wow, those kids need a place to go in the summer so they know the world is bigger than the city.'
Time went on and I had the opportunity to volunteer at a residential treatment center (RTC). I realized that I wanted to work with youth, but I had no idea how to start a nonprofit. I went back to school and earned a bachelor’s then a master’s degree in non profit management. It was during the master’s program that I started working at an RTC and loved the work!
We moved from Iowa back to Texas and I started working for a foster/adoption agency, CPS, a domestic violence shelter, and now I work for Bluebonnet Trails Community Services. In 2016 I made the leap and started the process to form a nonprofit corporation.
It has been a long, hard journey, but now we have a property for the boys home and we are seeing progress in fundraising. We hope to have the required financial resources to complete licensing and contract with the State of Texas by the end of 2020.
I am excited to make a difference in the lives of boys and every person they meet throughout their lives. I hope to make a societal change by teaching the boys about healthy relationships, and what it really means to develop a successful work ethic, and what it means to be a man."

We are located in the small town of Burnet, Texas. As with most small towns, it's cute, and has a lot of character! We got hot summers, mild winters, a nice downtown area, and some beautiful landmarks like the Highlands Lakes region. We love our hometown, and we wouldn't change it for anything else. Unfortunately rates of violence, abuse, and even assault are much higher in small towns than bigger cities. This means that The Oaks Agency has a bigger responsibility to give these teen boys a safe home, and we HAVE to be better than other foster care facilities. |
